After a lengthy study on healthy and able elderly volunteers, it was concluded that Centrophenoxine was able to boost mental alertness and even increase the effective long term memory consolidation. A wide variety of cognitive tests were used in this double blind trial.
The effect of Centrophenoxine on emotion was not a well-studied area for this supplement, and so a 2003 study was conducted in an attempt to elucidate this action in more detail. 80 volunteers were chosen in a placebo controlled, double blind study using an equal amount of female to male participants. Electrical activity of the brain was used as a marker for emotion, with carefully chosen excerpts from movies as the stimuli. Three groups were analyzed with one of them being given a placebo and the other two differing lengths of Centrophenoxine treatment. It was found that the group with 12 weeks of supplementation had an elevated mood and were more mentally alert.
How does it Work
Alzheimer’s disease is still not fully understood, but some suggest that a build-up of lipofuscin and beta-amyloid plaques causes some of the decline. Centrophenoxine has been found to reverse this build up and so may be useful as a preventative measure for Alzheimer’s patients. Centrophenoxine has also been shown to increase the uptake of glucose and stimulate RNA synthesis in brain glial cells.
An increase in cellular water volume was seen in those taking Centrophenoxine which may explain come of the benefits it has for the elderly, as dehydration at a cellular level has been impliocated age related decline.
