Phenylpiracetam is a phenyl derivative of the parent compound which was the first racetam produced, with purported rapid and easy absorption due to an enhanced lipophilicity.[1] It is up to 60 times more potent than its parent and is claimed to be both mental and physically stimulating, increasing both physical performance and cold resistance.[3] One study showed Phenylpiracetam to be more stimulating, neuroprotective and anti-amnesic than its parent compound.[2] One study found the psychostimulation to be moderately strong with some sleep disturbances reported.[1]

Since its discovery in Russia in the early 1990’s there has been various studies showing its efficacy as a treatment for those suffering from cognitive decline due to organic causes.[5][ 6][7][8][9] Phenylpiracetam is mainly used for asthenia (weakness) but studies have shown a significant reduction in anxiety and depression.[6] One study found that symptoms of depression were attenuated with those suffering from cognitive decline when Phenylpiracetam was given at 100mg twice daily.[6]

In addition to these findings, research has shown that rats injected with Phenylpiracetam showed improved motor functions (velocity and distance).[4]

There is one study showing an immunosupportive function of Phenylpiracetam after immunostress was artificially induced.[10]

How Does Phenylpiracetam Work?

Due to Phenylpiracetam being a derivative of the parent, it is assumed to work in the same way as many other racetam like nootropics. Action as a positive allosteric modulator of the AMPA receptor is likely, causing an increase in neuron excitability. There may also be an improved blood flow action, increasing oxygen supply to the brain, further facilitating optimum cognition. NMDA glutamate and ACh receptors activation may also be a part of the mechanism – improving learning and memory while also increasing alertness and energy. As Phenylpiracetam has a marked effect on physical stimulation, the action upon glutamate is probable with further sympathetic mechanisms also implicated.
