Lung cancer

Treatment of insomnia

Patients with primary insomnia suffer from daytime sleepiness and fatigue. Since modafinil and adrafinil are known to help induce wakefulness and alertness, some researchers hypothesized that it can also help in decreasing the effect of insomnia in the body. As such, 30 patients were involved in one study. They were randomly involved to three treatments: modafinil only, placebo combined with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and modafinil combined with cognitive behavioral therapy. Data analysis revealed that modafinil combined with CBT treatment is most efficient in improving the sleep patterns of participants. It decreases daytime sleepiness, improve sleep latency and increase compliance to therapy. It was further revealed that modafinil can help in alleviating some of the undesirable effects of CBT.
