What is Selank?

Selank is one of the most recent nootropic agents that are currently being sold in the market. Similar to Semax, it is categorized as a heptapeptide and an accessory substance that ehibits anti-anxiety effcts towards its users. It was developed in Russia producing a host of beneficial effects. Numerous clinical studies have been done to evaluate its effects on the human body and is awaiting approval for human use in Russia.

This heptapeptide is an analogue produced from the spleen. This peptide known as Tuftsin is a string of connected amino compoundss that works together to exert its beneficial effects in the body. One of its most notable and rather unique effects includes its ability to improve the immune system. Selank is actually related to Semax sharing similar effects, developed in the same research institute and has been approved as safe for human use in Ukraine and Russia. Several researches however reveal that Selank is more effective than Semax.

What are the benefits of Selank?

Promotes better immune response

There is strong evidence that Selank promotes better immune response. In one study aiming to discover the immunotropic effects of Selank, experiments revealed that the said nootropic agent has cytokine regulating effects. It appears to balance T helper cells and modulate interleukin-6 expression. For this reason, it may be used to protect patients suffering from anxiety-asthenic disorders as well as elderly individuals exposed to environmental stressors to prevent development of infectious diseases. There is also evidence that Selank is able to help stimulate the production of brain derived neurotropic factor (BDNF) which also helps in stimulating better immune response.

Modulates neurotransmitters dopamine, noradrenaline and serotonin

The primary mechanism of selank has been associated to increasing the levels of Serotonin – a neurotransmitter that influences appetite, regulates wake and sleep cycle and supports positive mood. Low levels of serotonin are also known to result to decreased appetite sleeping problems and depression. An animal study has shown that selank helped increase the levels of norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine in certain parts of the brain particularly the frontal cortex, hypothalamus and hippocampus. Other studies have also shown selank’s excellent ability to improve serotonin levels. Cognitive processes were also restored with selank administration after rodents are exposed to a specific neurotoxin that damages the catecholamine system.

Depression treatment

Clinical studies have shown that selank has anti-depressive abilities. In one study, it has been demonstrated that selank helps in restoring pleasure-seeking behaviors and fight off anhedonia – an occurrence where a person does not feel happy with activities and things that usually makes them feel cheerful. In this particular study, it has been observed that the study subjects has reduced immobility during a forced physical test and increased likelihood of sucrose self-administration.

Decreases anxiety

Numerous studies have also demonstrated that selank is effective in treating various anxiety disorders. In one study, 62 patient suffering from generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) were studied. 30 patients were administered with selank while the remaining 32 were given benzodiazepines. Interestingly, both substances produced similar anxiolytic effects. Selank however was able to produce anti-fatigue effects making it a truly unique and novel nootropic agent.

Promote cognitive enhancement

Selank has exhibited cognitive enhancing abilities. In one animal study, it has been shown that study subjects experienced better memory consolidation through increased serotonin production. Other studies have also shown that it improves cognitive deficit induced hypoxia and decrease noradrenaline and serotonin levels.

What is the proper selank dosage?

The accepted daily dosage range of selank is between 250 mcg to 3 mgs. It is however highly recommended for prospective users to start at lower doses to ensure that there is no negative reactions from administration.

Are there any side effects?

Selank is generally well-tolerated by humans. Other than the possible mucosal irritation from intranasal selank administration and slight pain from injectables, there are really no important side effects to report. There is little risk of allergic reaction, withdrawal and addiction as well. It is important to note however that individual reactions to selank administration varies from one person to another. Hence, it is critical that one exercise precautions before and during taking selank particularly that it is one of the newer compounds.

Should you use selank?

Due to its extensive beneficial effects (e.g. improved cognitive performance, better sleep, improved mood, decreased anxiety and stress), selank is indeed a very attractive nootropic agent. Clinical studies further supported the purported benefits of selank and that it has minimal risks. However, the question remains whether you should use it. There are other older nootropic agents that produce similar results; nonetheless, selank is an excellent nootropic agent in the making. For starters, you should probably avoid selank and opt for older and more popular neuroenhancing agents. For those who are brave enough and has wide experience in taking various nootropic agents, you may try selank given that you are able to exercise precautionary measures first.
