Aniracetam has been introduced in the late 1970s as a drug supplement that is able to fuel the AMPA receptors of the brain. It was initially developed by pharmaceutical company Hoffman-La Roche as a more potent nootropic for piracetam. Due to its ability to stimulate AMPA receptors, aniracetam was later labeled as an “ampakinootropic.” Following this, numerous researches and clinical trials were undertaken to discover the effects of aniracetam on the human body.

Early and most recent trials have shown that this particular nootropic drug has numerous potentiating effects one of which includes its ability to treat symptoms of anxiety. It has been shown to treat Alzheimer’s disease as well as such, it has been approved in Europe as a prescribed treatment for this particular degenerative disease. For 8 years, it has also been approved in Japan as a treatment for a host of emotional problems including agitation, anxiety and depression. Despite such clinical claims, aniracetam was pulled out from the Japanese market and was not approved by the US FDA because of conflicting research results regarding its efficacy.

How does aniracetam work?

How does aniracetam work - buy nowTo date, there is no definitive mechanism of action to describe how aniracetam works. Nonetheless, reports have shown that aniracetam works through improving synaptic efficacy from potentiating energy production and activating energy metabolism. Theorists also suggest that it modulates cholinergic and glutamatergic neurotransmission.

Glutamatergic neurotransmission

Aniracetam is known for its glutamatergic neurotransmission abilities. It has the capability to indirectly increase the production of acetylcholine and bind these to AMPA receptors leading to increased oxidation.

Cholinergic mechanisms

For cholinergic neurotransmission to occur, p-anisic acid, N-anisoyl-GABA and other metabolisms must be activated. Aniracetam activates the reticulothalamc cholinergic path thereby increasing choline acetyltransferase. As such, aniracetam is given the ability to rectify cholinergic neurotransmission system from cell apoptosis.

What are the benefits of aniracetam

Aniracetam is a novel treatment for several brain disorders. Animal studies have shown that this particular nootropic agent is able to effectively and safely treat emotional problems, cognitive disorders, some behavioral problems as well as sleep disturbances. To this light, numerous clinical studies were undertaken to evaluate its effects to humans.

Dementia treatment

Today, many individuals across the globe are suffering from dementia. This cognitive problem has serious implications, requiring multiple treatment methods. Since aniracetam is known for its glutamatergic mechanisms and neuroprotective properties, several studies were undertaken to evaluate its effects to people suffering from dementia. In one study, aniracetam was administered to patients suffering from cognitive disorders. Results have shown that it is a promising treatment for those who are diagnosed with mild cognitive deficits. Findings of this particular study indicated that aniracetam can help in preserving neuropsychological parameters and improve emotional stability of the study participants. Another sdouble blind trial has shown that aniracetam can promote memory improvement amongst patients suffering from senile dementia Alzheimer’s type.

Visual hallucination treatment

Another benefit that has been associated with aniracetam is its ability to prevent visual hallucination. To study the effects of aniracetam, it was administered to elderly patients diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and diffused Levy body disease. After aniracetam treatment, findings have shown that visual hallucination amongst these individuals has significantly improved. More importantly, there were no adverse effects associated with the treatment even after administering high doses of aniracetam.

Treatment for Alzheimer’s disease

Aniracetam’s purported benefits are extended to Alzheimer’s disease. In a study comparing acetyl cholinesterase inhibitors and aniracetam, it was revealed that the latter has the ability to enhance cognitive abilities of individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s.

Treatment for insomnia

Other than being able to treat Alzheimer’s disease, visual hallucination and dementia, aniracetam can help in treating insomnia as well. A study have shown that combining aniracetam and Zopiclone and administering it to patients diagnosed with insomnia (either cerebrovascular or non-cerebrovascular in origin) is effective in prolonging sleep. 78% of individuals who have undergone this combination treatment reported prolonged and improved sleep.

Progressive supranuclear palsy treatment

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a degenerative disorder characterized by parkinsonism, nuchal dystopia, vertical gaze palsy and dementa. Treatment includes noradrenaline precursors, tricyclic antidepressants, levodopa, anti-cholinergic agents and droid opt. Since aniracetam has anticholinergic capabilities, it was administered to some patients suffering from PSP. Results have shown that aniracetam was able to improve body balance, volition, intellectual abilities and motor function.

Despite numerous efforts to discover the pharmacodynamics properties of aniracetam, there remains to be vague knowledge regarding this nootropic agent. As such, usage should always be subjected to a doctor’s approval. Precautionary measures must be implemented before taking this drug.
